Breath of Life - Art Studio

    image

Just wanted to do a shout out to Josh, one of our artists at ArenaNet. Josh is a talented sculptor who also loves to share his gift with others. One of the coolest things he does is lead sculpting classes for all ages and skill levels. Check out his work at the link below - sometimes playful, sometimes haunting - definitely memorable.

    Wally Wood's 22 Panels

Comic book and classic Mad magazine afficionados over the age of 30 are probably familiar with the work of the late, great Wally Wood. He's perhaps best known for his send-up of superheroes in "Superduperman" with Harvey Kurtzman, as well as his early work on Marvel's Daredevil. In training up his assistants, Wood created his now famous "22 Panels that always work - or some interesting ways to get some variety into those boring panels where some dumb writer has a bunch of lame charactesr sitting around and talking for page after page!" Writer Joel Johnson has acquired a relatively high fidelity copy of this work and posted it to his blog, thanks Joel!

    Kayla Mohammadi Gallery Show

Kayla's a dear friend, who left MS and the tech field to pursue her life-long dream of being an artist. In that regard her and my friend Nana have always been sort of idols of mine. They proved they could make it happen. Her show starts April 9 at the Center for Maine Conteporary Art. If you happen to be in the area, check it out! Kayla's experimenting now with different colors and shapes - pushing and pulling to create the illusion of space. I've posted some samples below.

    But I *NEVER* Win Anything!

Big shout out to the folks at Peachpit Press! Not only do they publish my all-time favorite intro to design (The Non-Designers Design Book) but also an excellent introduction to Flash (Macromedia Flash: Visual Quickstart Guide). But the real reason I'm so happy with them is they just e-mailed me and told me that I just won a 4-day Pass to FlashForward, the conference that I'm attending. These conferences aren't cheap, so this is a big deal! Funny thing is that I used to run promotions for Internet Explorer. Most of my time was spent awarding these amazing prizes to people, but of course I was ineligible. Nice to finally get some love back!

    My Art

Some of this stuff dates back to when I was in high-school, but its a pretty good example of my work when I was drawing regularly. I can already feel the old skills coming back. Next week we begin figure drawing! For the full selection, please visit the gallery on Flickr.

    Art in Seattle

I'd love to find a nice RSS feed about art events in Seattle. If anyone can point me to one, please add a comment to this entry. In the meantime, the best way to do it is is really just walk the galleries in Pioneer square Today was beautiful, and we were fortunate enough to find a few leads:
    • Henri Matisse - Lithos & Etchings @ Greg Kucera Gallery (Feb 16 - Apr 1)
    • Sweetest Taboo - group show of random naughtiness combining Pop Surrealism and Urban contemporary @Roq La Rue
    • Toyohara Kunichika (Ukiyo-E) - A lovely collection of exotic prints and a lovely gallery owner and collector @ Carolyn Staley Prints

One of these days I'll get off my ass and also join in the Kirkland Art walks on first Thursdays.
